Doc Hudson RIP

Filed under: Disney, Entertainment, theme parks — admin @ 10:10 am

WESTPORT, Conn. (Sept. 27) – Paul Newman, the Academy-Award winning superstar who personified cool as an activist, race car driver, popcorn impresario and the anti-hero of such films as “Hud,” ”Cool Hand Luke” and “The Color of Money,” has died. He was 83.

Newman died Friday after a long battle with cancer at his farmhouse near Westport, publicist Jeff Sanderson said. He was surrounded by his family and close friends.

In May, Newman he had dropped plans to direct a fall production of “Of Mice and Men,” citing unspecified health issues.

He got his start in theater and on television during the 1950s, and went on to become one of the world’s most enduring and popular film stars, a legend held in awe by his peers. He was nominated for Oscars 10 times, winning one regular award and two honorary ones, and had major roles in more than 50 motion pictures, including “Exodus,” ”Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” ”The Verdict,” ”The Sting” and “Absence of Malice.”

Newman worked with some of the greatest directors of the past half century, from Alfred Hitchcock and John Huston to Robert Altman, Martin Scorsese and the Coen brothers. His co-stars included Elizabeth Taylor, Lauren Bacall, Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks and, most famously, Robert Redford, his sidekick in “Butch Cassidy” and “The Sting.”

He sometimes teamed with his wife and fellow Oscar winner, Joanne Woodward, with whom he had one of Hollywood’s rare long-term marriages. “I have steak at home, why go out for hamburger?” Newman told Playboy magazine when asked if he was tempted to stray. They wed in 1958, around the same time they both appeared in “The Long Hot Summer,” and Newman directed her in several films, including “Rachel, Rachel” and “The Glass Menagerie.”

With his strong, classically handsome face and piercing blue eyes, Newman was a heartthrob just as likely to play against his looks, becoming a favorite with critics for his convincing portrayals of rebels, tough guys and losers. “I was always a character actor,” he once said. “I just looked like Little Red Riding Hood.”

Newman had a soft spot for underdogs in real life, giving tens of millions to charities through his food company and setting up camps for severely ill children. Passionately opposed to the Vietnam War, and in favor of civil rights, he was so famously liberal that he ended up on President Nixon’s “enemies list,” one of the actor’s proudest achievements, he liked to say.

A screen legend by his mid-40s, he waited a long time for his first competitive Oscar, winning in 1987 for “The Color of Money,” a reprise of the role of pool shark “Fast” Eddie Felson, whom Newman portrayed in the 1961 film “The Hustler.”

Newman delivered a magnetic performance in “The Hustler,” playing a smooth-talking, whiskey-chugging pool shark who takes on Minnesota Fats — played by Jackie Gleason — and becomes entangled with a gambler played by George C. Scott. In the sequel — directed by Scorsese — “Fast Eddie” is no longer the high-stakes hustler he once was, but rather an aging liquor salesman who takes a young pool player (Cruise) under his wing before making a comeback.

He won an honorary Oscar in 1986 “in recognition of his many and memorable compelling screen performances and for his personal integrity and dedication to his craft.” In 1994, he won a third Oscar, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, for his charitable work.

His most recent academy nod was a supporting actor nomination for the 2002 film “Road to Perdition.” One of Newman’s nominations was as a producer; the other nine were in acting categories. (Jack Nicholson holds the record among actors for Oscar nominations, with 12; actress Meryl Streep has had 14.)

As he passed his 80th birthday, he remained in demand, winning an Emmy and a Golden Globe for the 2005 HBO drama “Empire Falls” and providing the voice of a crusty 1951 car in the 2006 Disney-Pixar hit, “Cars.”

But in May 2007, he told ABC’s “Good Morning America” he had given up acting, though he intended to remain active in charity projects. “I’m not able to work anymore as an actor at the level I would want to,” he said. “You start to lose your memory, your confidence, your invention. So that’s pretty much a closed book for me.”

He received his first Oscar nomination for playing a bitter, alcoholic former star athlete in the 1958 film “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.” Elizabeth Taylor played his unhappy wife and Burl Ives his wealthy, domineering father in Tennessee Williams’ harrowing drama, which was given an upbeat ending for the screen.

In “Cool Hand Luke,” he was nominated for his gritty role as a rebellious inmate in a brutal Southern prison. The movie was one of the biggest hits of 1967 and included a tagline, delivered one time by Newman and one time by prison warden Strother Martin, that helped define the generation gap, “What we’ve got here is (a) failure to communicate.”

Newman’s hair was graying, but he was as gourgeous as ever and on the verge of his greatest popular success. In 1969, Newman teamed with Redford for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” a comic Western about two outlaws running out of time. Newman paired with Redford again in 1973 in “The Sting,” a comedy about two Depression-era con men. Both were multiple Oscar winners and huge hits, irreverent, unforgettable pairings of two of the best-looking actors of their time.

Newman also turned to producing and directing. In 1968, he directed “Rachel, Rachel,” a film about a lonely spinster’s rebirth. The movie received four Oscar nominations, including Newman, for producer of a best motion picture, and Woodward, for best actress. The film earned Newman the best director award from the New York Film Critics.

In the 1970s, Newman, admittedly bored with acting, became fascinated with auto racing, a sport he studied when he starred in the 1972 film, “Winning.” After turning professional in 1977, Newman and his driving team made strong showings in several major races, including fifth place in Daytona in 1977 and second place in the Le Mans in 1979.

“Racing is the best way I know to get away from all the rubbish of Hollywood,” he told People magazine in 1979.

Despite his love of race cars, Newman continued to make movies and continued to pile up Oscar nominations, his looks remarkably intact, his acting becoming more subtle, nothing like the mannered method performances of his early years, when he was sometimes dismissed as a Brando imitator. “It takes a long time for an actor to develop the assurance that the trim, silver-haired Paul Newman has acquired,” Pauline Kael wrote of him in the early 1980s.

In 1982, he got his Oscar fifth nomination for his portrayal of an honest businessman persecuted by an irresponsible reporter in “Absence of Malice.” The following year, he got his sixth for playing a down-and-out alcoholic attorney in “The Verdict.”

In 1995, he was nominated for his slyest, most understated work yet, the town curmudgeon and deadbeat in “Nobody’s Fool.” New York Times critic Caryn James found his acting “without cheap sentiment and self-pity,” and observed, “It says everything about Mr. Newman’s performance, the single best of this year and among the finest he has ever given, that you never stop to wonder how a guy as good-looking as Paul Newman ended up this way.”

Newman, who shunned Hollywood life, was reluctant to give interviews and usually refused to sign autographs because he found the majesty of the act offensive, according to one friend.

He also claimed that he never read reviews of his movies.

“If they’re good you get a fat head and if they’re bad you’re depressed for three weeks,” he said.

Off the screen, Newman had a taste for beer and was known for his practical jokes. He once had a Porsche installed in Redford’s hallway — crushed and covered with ribbons.

“I think that my sense of humor is the only thing that keeps me sane,” he told Newsweek magazine in a 1994 interview.

In 1982, Newman and his Westport neighbor, writer A.E. Hotchner, started a company to market Newman’s original oil-and-vinegar dressing. Newman’s Own, which began as a joke, grew into a multimillion-dollar business selling popcorn, salad dressing, spaghetti sauce and other foods. All of the company’s profits are donated to charities. By 2007, the company had donated more than $175 million, according to its Web site.

In 1988, Newman founded a camp in northeastern Connecticut for children with cancer and other life-threatening diseases. He went on to establish similar camps in several other states and in Europe.

He and Woodward bought an 18th century farmhouse in Westport, where they raised their three daughters, Elinor “Nell,” Melissa and Clea.

Newman had two daughters, Susan and Stephanie, and a son, Scott, from a previous marriage to Jacqueline Witte.

Scott died in 1978 of an accidental overdose of alcohol and Valium. After his only son’s death, Newman established the Scott Newman Foundation to finance the production of anti-drug films for children.

Newman was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the second of two boys of Arthur S. Newman, a partner in a sporting goods store, and Theresa Fetzer Newman.

He was raised in the affluent suburb of Shaker Heights, where he was encouraged him to pursue his interest in the arts by his mother and his uncle Joseph Newman, a well-known Ohio poet and journalist.

Following World War II service in the Navy, he enrolled at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he got a degree in English and was active in student productions.

He later studied at Yale University’s School of Drama, then headed to New York to work in theater and television, his classmates at the famed Actor’s Studio including Brando, James Dean and Karl Malden. His breakthrough was enabled by tragedy: Dean, scheduled to star as the disfigured boxer in a television adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s “The Battler,” died in a car crash in 1955. His role was taken by Newman, then a little-known performer.

Newman started in movies the year before, in “The Silver Chalice,” a costume film he so despised that he took out an ad in Variety to apologize. By 1958, he had won the best actor award at the Cannes Film Festival for the shiftless Ben Quick in “The Long Hot Summer.”

In December 1994, about a month before his 70th birthday, he told Newsweek magazine he had changed little with age.

“I’m not mellower, I’m not less angry, I’m not less self-critical, I’m not less tenacious,” he said. “Maybe the best part is that your liver can’t handle those beers at noon anymore,” he said.

Newman is survived by his wife, five children, two grandsons and his older brother Arthur.

Devastated

Sometimes in life it’s really hard to comprend how things work …and I’m confused, bewildered and devastated all at the same time.

Less than a week ago I blogged about the new arrival in our family and how easy it all seemed. Today, less than a week later our world has been turned upside down and I really don’t know how to find the words to tell you that little Ethan passed away on Thursday afternoon in Arnold Palmer Hospital.

I don’t want to go into the details but I’ve debated with myself whether to remove the original post and I have asked many people what I should do. Opinions varied but I have decided to leave the post as it is. Rightly or wrongly.

One day I hope that I will be able to draw from it and to understand more about how I felt at the time. I also hope that it will be a comfort to my brother and my sister in law and that they will understand how I felt then and how I feel now.

I don’t think words can adequately describe how any parent can feel at the loss of a child but to lose one after just five days is simply unbearable. Goodbye for now little Ethan… your stay was short but in that time you gave us all a lot of joy.

Morons…

Filed under: Florida News, Uncategorized — ngw101 @ 1:44 pm

I’ve just finished eating my lunch and for the first time in ages I was actually able to sit down and read the newspaper while doing so. I now wish I hadn’t bothered.

Here’s why; apparently in just two weeks since Orlando turned on the cameras for red light running over 1,100 drivers have been ticketed. That’s right 1,100 drivers putting others at risk!

And yet we get morons like Michele Biecker saying “I hate this city” and addressing her envelope with the payment inside to “City of Orlando Thieves”. Then we get so called intelligent people like Greg Mauz , a traffic safety researcher for 22 years, coming out with “Where’s the problem? Fatalities from red light violations comprise a mere 2 per cent of all U.S. fatalities (about 925 of 43,000).”

“Where’s the problem?” ” a mere 2 per cent” indeed. What kind of moron thinks that it is acceptable that 925 die needlessly each year?

I don’t often agree with what the City of Orlando does but on this topic it is bang on the mark. 1,100 drivers in two weeks says everything about why this action was necessary. 1,100 drivers at just seven intersections… let’s role out more camera’s and catch these morons that jeopardise our familes.

As for you Ms. Biecker… please move.

What a weekend….Part 1

Have you ever had a weekend that hit you like a whirlwind? One that left you feeling shattered but you still had to get up and get your work done. Well that happened to me this weekend.

On Friday evening I was heading off to Hard Rock Hotel for an opening party for a business event when I got word that my pregnant sister in law (Tracey) had been admitted to hospital in Celebration so they could start inducing the baby. No problem thought I… no problem thought they (Tracey and my brother, Andrew) … it will take 14 hours plus before the little devil decides to make an entrance.

So, at 7.45pm I head away from the event to go home. Oh…did I say the thieves at Hard Rock wanted $23.00 to park the car for 3 hours? Another reason I really HATE hotels. Anyway, back to the story, there I was happily eating the miles up on I4 when I got a phone call from my wife telling me to go straight to the hospital as Tracey had already had the baby!

Ethan is born

Amazing! Is that all it takes thesedays….3 bloomin’ hours? What happened to the 40 hours of hell my wife went through 18 years ago for my eldest? What happened to the hours of pain, the hours of pushing, the hours of feeling hopeless while someone else suffers?

So I get to the hospital and what do I find… Ethan Andrew happily being cuddled by my youngest daughter, my brother (the new Daddy) on his computer (where else?) and Tracey (the new Mommy) looking like nothing had happened to her. Is this how it’s supposed to be thesedays? I’ve heard of quick fulfillment but isn’t this taking it a little too far? How can it be right that you can give birth to a baby quicker than you can buy an I-phone? Or watch the Batman movie? Crikey, the price of gas didn’t even have chance to go up in the time this took.

I dunno…. part 2 later when I’ve worked this out.

Why is gas still so high?

Filed under: Business, politics — admin @ 8:51 am

I read this:

<<NEW YORK -Oil prices plunged to a seven-month low Monday as the Gulf Coast energy infrastructure appeared relatively unharmed after Hurricane Ike and traders bet that Lehman Brothers ‘ bankruptcy could ignite a massive liquidation of commodities.

Light, sweet crude for November delivery fell $5.67 to $95.64 a barrel in pre-market trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after earlier dropping to $94.41, the lowest level since Feb. 14.

Crude has fallen more than $50 — or 35 percent — from its all-time trading record of $147.27 reached July 11 as a global economic slowdown continues to weigh on demand for energy. >>

So let me do some math … $4.00 – 35% should be around $2.60 … current gas prices by my house $3.75.  Who is guilty of the rip-off?  Someone somewhere has to be accountable … revolutions start on much smaller issues … time to drive out the crooks.

Why rednecks may rule the world

Filed under: politics — admin @ 2:05 pm

I was sent this by a friend who like myself is Scottish.  I find the parallels interesting if not totally accurate, but it is a fascinating read … just strange that it landed on the BBC web site.

By Joe Bageant
Author of Deerhunting With Jesus

During this US election cycle we are hearing a lot from the pundits and candidates about “heartland voters,” and “white working class voters.” What they are talking about are rednecks. But in their political correctness, media types cannot bring themselves to utter the word “redneck.” So I’ll say it for them: redneck-redneck-redneck-redneck.

The fact is that we American rednecks embrace the term in a sort of proud defiance. To us, the term redneck indicates a culture we were born in and enjoy. So I find it very interesting that politically correct people have taken it upon themselves to protect us from what has come to be one of our own warm and light hearted terms for one another.

On the other hand, I can quite imagine their concern, given what’s at stake in the upcoming election. We represent at least a third of all voters and no US president has ever been elected without our support.

Consequently, rednecks have never had so many friends or so much attention as in 2008. Contrary to the stereotype, we are not all tobacco chewing, guffawing Southerners, but are scattered from coast to coast. Over 50% of us live in the “cultural south”, which is to say places with white Southern Scots-Irish values – redneck values.

We fry things nobody ever considered friable – things like cupcakes, banana sandwiches and batter dipped artificial cheese…even pickles

They include western Pennsylvania, central Missouri and southern Illinois, upstate Michigan and Minnesota, eastern Connecticut, northern New Hampshire…

So when you look at what pundits call the red state heartland, you are looking at the Republic of Redneckia.

As to having our delicate beer-sodden feelings protected from the term redneck; well, I appreciate the effort, though I highly suspect that the best way to hide snobbishness is to pose as protector of any class of folks you cannot bear. Thus we are being protected by the very people who look down on us – educated urban progressives.

And let’s face it, there’s plenty to look down on. By any tasteful standard, we ain’t a pretty people.

Uppity and slick? Not us…

We come in one size: extra large. We are sometimes insolent and often quick to fight. We love competitive spectacle such as NASCAR and paintball, and believe gun ownership is the eleventh commandment.

We fry things nobody ever considered friable – things like cupcakes, banana sandwiches and batter dipped artificial cheese…even pickles.

Her daughter had a baby out of wedlock? Big deal. What family has not?

And most of all we are defiant and suspicious of authority, and people who are “uppity” (sophisticated) and “slick” (people who use words with more than three syllables). Two should be enough for anybody.

And that is one of the reasons that, mystifying as it is to the outside world, John McCain’s choice of the moose-shooting Alaskan woman with the pregnant unmarried teen daughter appeals to many redneck and working class Americans.

We all understand that there is a political class which dominates in America, and that Sarah Palin for damned sure is not one of them. And the more she is attacked by liberal Democratic elements (translation: elite highly-educated big city people) the more America’s working mooks will come to her defence. Her daughter had a baby out of wedlock? Big deal. What family has not? She is a Christian fundamentalist who believes God spat on his beefy paws and made the world in seven days? So do at least 150 million other Americans. She snowmobiles and fishes and she is a looker to boot. She’s a redneck.

American ethos

The term redneck indicates a lifestyle and culture that can be found in every state in our union. The essentials of redneck culture were brought to America by what we call the Scots Irish, after first being shipped to the Ulster Plantation, where our, uh, remarkable cultural legacy can still be seen every 12 July in Ireland.

Ultimately, the Scots Irish have had more of an effect on the American ethos than any other immigrant group. Here are a few you will recognize:

  • Belief that no law is above God’s law, not even the US Constitution.
  • Hyper patriotism. A fighting defence of native land, home and heart, even when it is not actually threatened: ie, Iraq, Panama, Grenada, Somalia, Cuba, Nicaragua, Vietnam, Haiti and dozens more with righteous operations titles such as Enduring Freedom, Restore Hope, and Just Cause.
  • A love of guns and tremendous respect for the warrior ideal. Along with this comes a strong sense of fealty and loyalty. Fealty to wartime leaders, whether it be FDR or George Bush.
  • Self effacement, humility. We are usually the butt of our own jokes, in an effort not to appear aloof among one another.
  • Belief that most things outside our own community and nation are inferior and threatening, that the world is jealous of the American lifestyle.
  • Personal pride in equality. No man, however rich or powerful, is better than me.
  • Perseverance and belief in hard work. If a man or a family is poor, it is because they did not work hard enough. God rewards those who work hard enough. So does the American system.
  • The only free country in the world is the United States, and the only reason we ever go to war is to protect that freedom.

All this has become so deeply instilled as to now be reflexive. It represents many of the worst traits in American culture and a few of the best.

And that has every thinking person here in the US, except perhaps John McCain and Sarah Palin, worried.

Very worried.

Wolves win the Masters!

Filed under: British news, Entertainment, just for fun — ngw101 @ 11:05 pm

Well that’s the first silverware of the season wrapped up and my team, Wolverhampton Wanderers (Wolves) managed to defeat the big money merchants, Manchester City 4-3 in the final!

Now, before anyone gets too excited I should qualify things… it was the UK Masters Football tournament…a tournament for retired pro’s! It’s nothing more than a fun event really but it does attract some of yesteryear’s famous names… the likes of Ian Rush, Glenn Hoddle, Ian Wright, Paul Gascoigne, Liam Brady and Gianfranco Zola.

Over the last couple of years we’ve done quite well, last year we thrashed the mighty Manchester Utd 6-1 in the semi final and that was after thrashing Leeds by 6 in an earlier round. Unfortunately we could only manage a draw with Leicester in last years final and we ended up losing on penalties!

So this year the boys (OK… the old men) managed to go one better by beating City in the final after beating Bristol City and Middlesbrough 4-3 in previous rounds. Well done men! Our first trophy in years!
