Made For Canadians

Filed under: Business, Florida News, Leisure, News, hidden orlando, vacation tips — ngw101 @ 6:24 am

This week Orlando / Orange County Convention & Visitors Bureau, Inc (Orlando CVB) unveiled a Canadian specific savings program on their web site this week. Interestingly, Canada is set to overtake the UK as the top international market and that’s why the OCCVB decided to do this.

The OCCVB has teamed up with local Orlando businesses to offer approximately 70 different deals to visitors from Canada and they are valid now through April 30, 2010. Overall, we applaud this initiative but we question the thinking that only Canadians can get this deal…why not everyone? Why not have one big party with people from everywhere getting to enjoy a great deal and a great time?

So, with that in mind, that’s what we at Florida Leisure Vacation Homes have set out to do. We don’t have just one great deal for one nationality… we have the same one for every race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin. We believe everyone deserves a great vacation and a great deal. Check out our deals on our vacation homes at www.FloridaLeisure.com

Vacation Rentals – The New Meeting Place

A new trend is emerging that is taking the meeting place of the small and big business world to new levels. CEO’s, Presidents and top level managers are now beginning to see the advantages of hiring a vacation rental property to host their meetings.

Of course, the biggest attraction in this day and age is the ability to save a lot of money over more traditional meetings at hotels where not only do you need to hire a meeting room but you also have to pay for several guest rooms to house staff on overnight stays. It can be quite an expensive proposition.

A vacation rental often has two, three, four or even more bedrooms and this means that the cost of housing those who attend a meeting is significantly lower and of course, hiring a meeting room is totally unnecessary as the vacation rental has ample room to spread out, formally or informally.

Business people are also seeing the huge benefits of keeping everyone in the same place and not spread out over the campus of a large hotel. A good team spirit is a critical factor in the business world today and creating that winning team is a difficult task that can take a long time if it’s not managed correctly. A vacation rental truly helps foster the right spirit as everyone gets to work and play together and that means it is much easier to keep everyone focused on the business goal.

Vacation rentals also score very highly when it comes to meals. Large bills are often run up everyday in the business world by entertaining clients and hosting staff meetings but a vacation rental offers both the chance to save money and a unique setting to do business. Most vacation rentals have a fully equipped kitchen so you can prepare snacks and meals as and when you want, just like you would in the office or at home. Some vacation rental companies even have professional chefs available to pamper your guests and your staff but more often than not, there is usually someone who likes to show off their culinary skills by cooking a delicious meal for everyone and this can be a surefire winner when it comes to creating partnerships and profitable relationships for the future.

Another great attraction about a vacation rental is that very often they will have two or more areas where you can meet. Focus groups are easy to set up as most rentals have a formal area and an informal area and nothing beats a poolside lunch or a dinner with a great view such as in the mountains to get that important business matter finalized.

Very often business people have reported their best results after their colleagues and business partners have relaxed a little at the vacation rental. Taking a swim, a walk on the beach or playing board games together very often gets people in a better frame of mind to make better business decisions and keeps them feeling fresh to make the next big decision.

Hiring a vacation rental for your next meeting just makes good business sense, so maybe it’s time for you to find out what a vacation rental can do for you and your business?

Hotel Occupancy in Orlando is at 57.9%

Filed under: Business, Florida News, Leisure, hidden orlando, vacation tips — ngw101 @ 2:16 pm

According to Smith Travel Research, Orlando’s hotel occupancy rate was 57.9 percent for the week ending Oct. 17, 2009 — a drop of 7.8 percent from the same period a year ago.

Revenue per available room, an indicator of a hotel’s business, was $54.90, which was down 16.7 percent from the same period a year ago.

The average daily room rate fell 9.6 percent to $94.83.

Now all that these stats tell me is that people traveling on vacation or on business have found a better choice… a vacation rental home. It’s really not about money either, it’s all about the experience that a person is going to get. Let’s face facts, being couped up in a 300 to 400 sq.ft room with a small closet, one bathroom and one TV is not anyone’s idea of fun.

A smarter choice is a vacation rental. A vacation home is at least 1500 sq. ft in size and very often bigger. In fact it’s rather like having a large suite at a 5 star hotel but only better. The reason it’s better is that a vacation home has multiple rooms, a formal and informal living area and best of all, most Orlando vacation rental homes have their own private heated swimming pool to play around in.

Parking is also another issue. By now we’ve all become accustomed to being nickled and dimed at hotels for parking, and I won’t mention “resort fees”… but at a vacation home you simply pull up on the drive and walk a few paces to enter your home. Absolutely no extra charge and no pulling bags down endless hotel corridors.

So is it any wonder that occupancy in hotels is down while occupancy in vacation homes is up? It’s really not a difficult choice? So how smart are you? Visit www.FloridaLeisure.com and find out what awaits you on your next trip to Orlando.

Congratulations Ivanka and Jared

Filed under: Business, News, just for fun, stress relief — ngw101 @ 2:02 pm

Congratulations are in order to Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner who are getting married today, 25th October, at Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey.

Five hundred guests are expected and among them is Regis Philbin, who will serenade the bride and groom, according to several reports

Ivanka, who turns 28 on Oct. 30, and Jared, also 28, got engaged in July and they’ve been a couple for two-plus years, except for a minor breakup in early 2008.

Ivanka Trump & Nigel Worrall

Ivanka Trump & Nigel Worrall

In addition to her work on “The Celebrity Apprentice” and with her dad’s company, The Trump Organization, Ivanka  has a jewelry line, the Ivanka Trump Collection, and has written a memoir/self-help book called “The Trump Card” that’s currently No. 13 on the New York Times best-seller list. I can also attest to the fact that Ivanka is a very special lady who has a very wise head on her relatively young shoulders as I briefly met with her not so long ago.

Jared is the publisher of the New York Observer and a principal in the Kushner Companies, a real-estate development company founded by his father, real estate mogul, Charles. Now this promises to be some match up, Donald’s daughter and Charles’s son. Wonder what they’ll be building together in the future?

Here’s to a happy and successful union and congratulations to the happy couple.

True Story – Don’t mess with old people

Filed under: Entertainment, just for fun — ngw101 @ 9:34 am

HOW TO CALL THE POLICE WHEN YOU’RE OLD AND DON’T MOVE SO FAST ANYMORE.

George Phillips , an elderly man, from Meridian, Mississippi, was going up to bed, when his wife told him that he’d left the light on in the garden shed, which she could see from the bedroom window. George opened the back door to go turn off the light, but saw there were people in the shed – stealing things.

He phoned the police, who asked “Is someone in your house?”

“No, he said, “but some people are breaking into my garden shed and stealing from me.”

The police dispatcher said “All patrols are busy, lock your doors and an officer will be along when one is available.”

George said, “Okay.” He hung up the phone and counted to 30. Then he phoned the police again. “Hello, I just called you a few seconds ago because there were people stealing things from my shed. Well, you don’t have to worry about them now because I just shot them” and he hung up.

Within five minutes, six Police Cars, a SWAT Team, a Helicopter, two Fire Trucks, a Paramedic, and an Ambulance showed up at his residence, and caught the burglars red-handed. One of the Policemen said to George, “I thought you said that you’d shot them!” George said, “I thought you said there was nobody available!” Don’t mess with old people! (LOVELY True Story)

Pointe Orlando, International Drive, Orlando

Yesterday I was at Pointe Orlando for a meeting and as soon as that finished I took a look around. I’ve always known it as a great place to go and eat, as there are some 13 restaurants to suit every palate there, but I didn’t realize that there was much more to the place.

There is some great shopping with some big brand names such as the Armani Exchange, Bath & Body Works, Hollister, Keihl’s, Tharoo & Co., Tommy Bahama’s and Victoria’s Secret. Pointe Orlando also houses a huge IMAX cinema for those that wish to catch a quick movie.

Pointe Orlando is one of Orlando’s hidden secrets but it’s really pretty visible if you drive along International Drive. It’s a favorite hang out for people attending conventions as it’s very close to the Orlando Convention Center but it’s also a great place to visit if you are on vacation.

It’s really hard to miss as the well known “upside down” house WonderWorks is next door. WonderWorks is known as an amusement park for the mind as it has over 100 interactive exhibits for the entire family to experience. You can land a space shuttle here or discover the freedom of flight by piloting F14 and F18 fighter jets and if sport is your thing, then you can step in front of the blue screen and become immersed in a 3 dimensional game of basketball or soccer. There’s also the earthquake simulator, a bubble lab and a bed of nails to test out! There’s a lot more stuff to do as well but I’ll not say anymore so there are some surprises left for you when you visit.

I also did a short video as I walked around Pointe Orlando….enjoy:

Congratulations to us oldies who were brought up proper !

Filed under: British news, Entertainment, just for fun — ngw101 @ 5:42 pm

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 1930’s, 1940’s, 50’s, 60’s and early 70’s!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn’t get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle..

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.

Even though all the shops closed at 6.00pm and didn’t open on the weekends, somehow we didn’t starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren’t overweight because……

WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY ,
No video/dvd films,
No mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms……….WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
Lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time…

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,

We rode bikes or walked to a friend’s house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn’t have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn’t had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on
MERIT

Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and bully’s always ruled the playground at school.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

Our parents didn’t invent stupid names for their kids like ‘Kiora’ and ‘Blade’ and ‘Ridge’ and ‘Vanilla’

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO
DEAL WITH IT ALL !

And YOU are one of them!
CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

PS -The big type is because your eyes are not too good at your age anymore!

Capitalism

Filed under: Business, Entertainment, hidden orlando, just for fun — ngw101 @ 6:16 am

Not often I get chance to wade into politics or things of that nature on this blog but I went along to see Michael Moore’s new film “Capitalism – A Love Story” earlier this week and I thought I’d write a review about it as below. If you’ve seen the movie, let me know what you think… feel free to comment below.

Capitalism

Capitalism is the title of Michael Moore’s new movie and I went along to see it just recently. As always Moore has his own agenda to keep but this movie does have some thought provoking moments that keep the viewer interested and entertained. The movie starts by showing a family being evicted after a mortgage foreclosure. From there it moves on to attack companies such as Wal-Mart who took out over 350,000 separate life insurance policies on their ‘dead peasants” just so they can make a profit out of the employee should he or she die.

After that Moore addresses the salaries of pilots who we are led to believe only do it for the love of flying, and then he revisits the foreclosure issue by revealing that ironically 60% of the foreclosure notices come from Flint, Michigan so, therefore, there is a conspiracy to make the whole country a similar place to how Flint is today.

From there we move into an attack on corruption in Government as he accuses many public figures of getting favorable loans as VIP friends of Angelo Mozilo, former head of Countrywide before we get to the public bail out of Bank of America, GM, AIG, Chrysler etc and his quite ludicrous but comical attempts to recover some of the public money given out to these companies. Moore then goes further as he points out that it is the failed executives at Goldman Sachs who are now advising Government leaders and that there is effectively a “jobs for the boys” mentality leading the nation.

Moore then highlights the workers at Republic Doors & Windows, Chicago, as innocent victims who then organized a sit in when the factory closed and they weren’t paid what was owed to them. It took just six days for Bank of America and the company owners to come to a deal with them to pay them off and buy their silence.

Of course, much of this movie is rhetoric and designed to shock the audience. It’s also quite amusing in places and the comment “there is a reason why I can’t take out fire insurance on other people’s houses” deals pretty well with the life insurance issue but fails to ask the question why the families concerned didn’t take out such insurance themselves?

Moore clearly loves the idea of “fairness in the work place” and champions Alvarado Street Bakery as the business of the future where every employee comes together in a “true democracy” to vote on the direction of the company. His working for the common good theme continues as he talks about Dr. Jonas Salk who refused to patent his vaccine for polio, thus saving him from the sin of getting really rich and he praises the unselfish work of the police and the firemen who go out to work each day to help the common good as if to solidify his point that enough money is enough money and we should all do more for others.

Finally, Moore gets to Roosevelt’s 1944 second bill of rights. This was the proposed bill that would have allegedly guaranteed that every person in the United States would have a job with a living wage, freedom from unfair competition and monopolies, a home, medical care, education and recreation. Grand ideals but unfortunately (for Moore) none of this came to fruition as Roosevelt passed away in 1945 and we can only wonder what might have been had it come to pass, even though Moore makes the point that after the 2nd World War the people of Europe and Japan got all of the items on the Roosevelt wish list.

I have to admit that I quite enjoyed the movie but the big problem for me was the lack of balance. Moore fails to bring in one single small or large business owner to tell their side of the story and about the struggles or successes they have in running their own business to create jobs and wealth. The film also fails to mention the current work of people like Buffett, Gates and many other great philanthropists (Carnegie, Rowntree, Rockefeller, Ford, Kellogg) who have created wealth from literally nothing, not to mention capitalism, and then given huge sums of money away in an effort to help human beings all over the world, arguably doing more for society than all previous governments put together have ever done.

So Mr. Moore, you might have found a couple of clergymen to say that capitalism is the root of all evil and you may have made a watchable and somewhat thought provoking movie but the real irony in all of this is that without capitalism, this film wouldn’t have been made at all. It would also have been nice to see you address how capitalism has or hasn’t helped you create your own media empire and your own personal fortune.

Perhaps a better title for the movie should have been “Greed”. After all, it was the greed of the banks, the government, many people in business and lastly the people themselves that caused much of today’s problems and I’d strongly argue that it isn’t “capitalism” that has “failed” us…it’s only people who have done that.
