Bubba Watson Proves You Don’t Need Lessons To Win The Masters!

In an enthralling 2012 Masters tournament at Augusta, “Bubba” Watson beat Louis Oosthuizen to the green jacket and the first prize of $1,440,000.

It’s been quite a two week period for Bubba as he and his wife Angie have just adopted a one month old baby boy named Caleb. Further, among his tears of celebration he also remembered his father, Gerry Lester Watson, Sr.,  who died in October 2010 of throat cancer. In emotional scenes, Watson’s mother Molly Marie Watson met her son as he walked victoriously off the 10th green and into the Butler Cabin to collect his first green jacket.

The day hadn’t started so well for Watson as he bogeyed the first hole and then watched as South African Louis Oosthuizen, who won the 2010 British Open, took the lead on the second hole with a marvelous albatross at the second hole… the first at that hole in Masters history and the fourth ever in this much storied event.

Slowly but surely Watson ebbed away and he finally caught Oosthuizen with four straight birdies, starting on No. 13. When he dropped a 6-footer on the 16th, he found himself tied with his playing partner at 10 under, where they remained until the play off. Watson had two earlier chances to win as he missed a 20-foot birdie putt on the 72d hole, then missed an 8-footer for birdie on the first playoff hole at the 18th hole.

In the end, the win featured the unconventional, long-hitting lefthander with a pink driver, pulling off the shot of his life. Unable to see the 10th green because he was well right of the fairway with his drive on the second play off hole, Bubba somehow wrapped a wedge from 155 yards around a few of the towering pines at Augusta National Golf Club, hooking the risky shot and waiting for the crowd’s reaction to tell him how good it was. It was much better than good, settling 10 feet away and setting up a two-putt par and enough to beat Louis Oosthuizen in sudden-death.

Watson became the 14th different player to win in the past 14 major championships and even more remarkable is the fact that he has now won his first major without ever having a golf lesson or ever watching his swing on video. It’s typical of a man who paid $110,000 for the original General Lee, the orange Dodge Charger for the TV show The Dukes of Hazzard and who has also participated in a humorous music video with Rickie Fowler, Ben Crane and Hunter Mahan, who call themselves “Golf Boys,” and have now became a sensation on YouTube.

After collecting his green jacket and title of 2012 Masters champion, Watson said “It’s a blessing. To go home to my new son will be a lot of fun. Golf isn’t everything for me. If I would have lost today, it wouldn’t have been the end of the world. To win is awesome, but I’ll go back to real life next week and I still haven’t changed a diaper.”

“After (Oosthuizen) dropped that 2 on me at (No.) 2, I just kept my head down because I knew there were birdies on the back nine. And I was over in the trees on 10 in regulation, so I was used to that shot when I got into the playoff. I had a huge gap, had to hook it about 40 yards, and it worked out. I just got into the trees, I saw a crazy shot in my head, and now I’m wearing the green jacket.”

Indeed it was a crazy shot… but it was the one that won the day and one that said to the whole world that anyone with a desire to play the game of golf can do so and you don’t need a lesson to do it. Congratulations to Bubba Watson… you get the feeling the journey has just begun for the boy from Bagdad, Florida. Enjoy your week at your Isleworth home Bubba… it’s a special time for you and your family.

  • Twin Chasers – Friends ride tubes 375 feet down an intertwining pair of enclosed water slides before plunging into a refreshing pool below
  • Splash Out – The thrill seekers of the family can ascend to the tallest point of the water park attraction and choose from one of three unique slides, then speed down a 60-foot drop and “splash out” into the water below
  • Joker Soaker - A fun, interactive playground with various lengths, heights and types of slides that offer something different for every member of the family. Guests can wade in the surrounding pool and be surprised with a torrential spill from a 300-gallon bucket

Universal Orlando has set a joint grand opening date for two new spectacularly entertaining guest experiences.  The new Universal’s Superstar Parade and Universal’s Cinematic Spectacular: 100 Years of Movie Memories will have their grand opening on May 8.

Both experiences follow this year’s re-opening of The Blue Man Group Show, the re-launch of The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man and the opening of the new Hollywood Drive-In Miniature Golf experience at Universal Citywalk.  They will be followed by this summer’s launch of Universal Orlando’s newest blockbuster ride – Despicable Me Minion Mayhem.

Universal’s Cinematic Spectacular: 100 Years of Movie Memories will present some of the world’s best and most popular films in an innovative, high-tech symphony of imagery, light, sound and special effects.  The show highlights some of the most fun, dramatic, awe-inspiring moments from nearly 200 films – representing approximately 300 Academy Award nominations and 100 Academy Award winners.

Narrated by Academy Award-winning actor and Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille honoree Morgan Freeman, Universal’s Cinematic Spectacular celebrates Universal Pictures’ most iconic films. Guests will get to sing and dance along with their favorite characters including the minions from the blockbuster animated feature Despicable Me, E.B. from the hit comedy, Hop, Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora & Diego. Guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy performances and character meet-and-greets prior to the parade at select locations throughout the day.

New Aardvark Baby Is Second Born at Busch Gardens

Busch Gardens welcomed its newest resident earlier this week: an adorable aardvark born Monday, March 26. The healthy baby weighs about 4.8 pounds and is expected to grow to more than 120 lbs. within its first year.

It is currently living behind the scenes at Jambo Junction – located in the Nairobi area of the park – and is receiving care from members of the animal care team. The baby will join mom “Izzy” and dad “Friz” in the upcoming weeks and will be an Animal Ambassador for the park, along with its older brother “Zawadi,” who will be a year old on April 10.

There are fewer than 40 aardvarks in zoos in North America. They are solitary by nature, and aardvark births are not common.

Museum of Military History to open in Kissimmee on Saturday 31st March

After months of preparation, the Museum of Military History, Osceola County’s only military history institution, is set to open its doors to the public Saturday, March 31, at noon.

The museum is located just down the road from the Florida Leisure Vacation Homes office at 5210 W. U.S. Highway 192 in Kissimmee and the 10,000-square-foot museum will provide interactive displays and exhibits beginning with historical photos, uniforms and interpretations of the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and the recent military conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Rob Dent, museum spokesman, said the facility will offer either guided or self-guided tours.

“It also features veterans’ oral histories as former or active duty service men and women can recollect their military experience to share with visitors,” Dent said.

The museum will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and admission ranges from $7 for adults with discounts for seniors, students and veterans.

If you plan on visiting more often, an annual membership provides all the benefits of regular admission plus unlimited visits to the museum, inclusion in selected special events; early invitation to pre-register for paid events; monthly museum e-newsletter, updates and special events, personalized membership card and membership to partner museums.

Membership classifications include individual membership at $35, annual family membership for $75 and annual corporate membership for $100 to $150 depending on number of employees.

The museum operates under the umbrella of the Osceola Veterans Tribute and Museum and is a nonprofit organization.

“As the museum establishes itself in the community as a hub for history buffs, interested citizens and active duty servicemen and veterans, it will also be a resource for students,” Dent said. “Additionally, Central Florida is becoming a destination for military reunions with visitors enjoying the mild climate and other attractions while staying in Osceola County. Visiting the museum and benefiting from its insightful and educational accounts of the conflicts that have forged the past and current history of our country will provide a memorable experience.”

Attending the 11am opening on Saturday will be Col. Danny McKnight, made famous in the book and film “Black Hawk Down” for his actions in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1993. Colonel McKnight’s awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (2 awards), the Bronze Star Medal for Valor, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, the Ranger Tab, the Master Parachutist Badge with Combat Star, and the Pathfinder Badge.  After completing 28 and one-half years of service to our country, Colonel McKnight returned to his hometown in Florida.  He has served in two Homeland Security related positions in Brevard County…as the Homeland Security Coordinator for the County’s Emergency Management Office, then as the Homeland Security Training Coordinator in the Criminal Justice Center at Brevard Community College.  Colonel McKnight now focuses all his efforts on being a nationwide motivational speaker.  He and his wife, Linda, reside in Rockledge, Florida.

Epcot Flower & Garden Festival Blossoms with Fun for the Whole Family

Filed under: Epcot at Walt Disney World Orlando,Florida Vacation Tips — Michelle @ 2:42 pm

Hi there! Michelle here and I’m delighted to have been asked to contribute to the Florida Leisure blog. I hope you enjoy my thoughts about some of the great things to do in Orlando and Central Florida and for my first post I thought I’d talk about a recent visit I made with my family to the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival. The festival is in full bloom this spring, adding bursts of vibrant color, whimsical topiaries and sweet scents down virtually every park path.

My husband and I took advantage of a gorgeous March day to bring our 8-year-old daughter, Gabby, who has been there several times, and her friend, Megan, who was visiting the park for the first time.

Among the featured weekend events of the festival are the home and garden presentations led by some of the biggest names at HGTV, as well as concerts by big name acts from the 1960s and 70s such as Starship and The Monkees. I would have loved to hear from Sabrina Soto from “The High Low Project” but with two kids in tow, the presentation was quickly relegated to the “maybe next year” list. Instead, we chose to spend our day hitting the everyday highlights of Epcot but still making sure we took plenty of time to smell the roses. And roses there were…

According to Walt Disney World Resort, Epcot boasts 30 million blooms, 240 floating mini-gardens on two ponds, 700 container gardens of flowers, herbs, plants and vegetables, dozens of Disney character topiaries, 30 “flower towers” of impatiens, and sweeping beds of original floral designs spread across 260 acres, all of which take more than one year and 400 Walt Disney World horticulturists to plan and prepare. The description promises a great deal—and it delivers.

The Disney character topiaries are perhaps the most impactful element of the festival, with the most beloved names from all generations of Disney films represented. I was instantly smitten with Mickey and Minnie Mouse in the Classic Characters garden, whereas the girls unanimously voted Lady and the Tramp, found in Italy, their favorite. Interestingly, it’s a movie they’ve never seen, yet it involved puppies, they reasoned, so it must be great. I have to admit, the long grasses representing Lady’s floppy cocker spaniel ears were a stroke of horticultural brilliance.

With the topiaries themed to various areas of the park, it seemed there was always a surprise waiting around the next corner, especially in the World Showcase, where we found greenery pandas and a flowery, mist-breathing dragon in China, and the ever charming Lumière and Cogsworth from Beauty and the Beast frolicking in a garden maze in France, to name just a few.

Bambi’s Butterfly Garden was another favorite with the kids, with dozens of species flitting from flower to flower and occasionally finding rest on a guest’s head or shoulder. The oversized butterfly topiaries outside the tent made for yet another great photo stop but it was the chrysalis display that most interested Gabby, and the Bambi, Thumper and Flower topiaries that captured Megan’s attention.

The Pixie Hollow Fairy Garden was another delightful surprise. Although it’s billed for preschoolers, even the adults seemed to enjoy strolling through the garden of graceful green figurines and peering down into the tiny representations of their fairy homes.

Sprawling expanses of flower beds, often in whimsical flower patterns, line the banks of Epcot’s many lakes, while floating flower beds dot the surface of the water, making the concrete walkways from Future World to the World Showcase much more appealing.

Our first order of business for the morning was to grab Fast Passes to ride Soarin’ in the late afternoon. The whole family loved the feet-dangling, free-spirited feeling of flight and the incredible scenery. After several hours passed, we were able to obtain early evening Fast Passes for Test Track, another family favorite. The speed lap at the end didn’t sit well with our guest, who crossed her arms and scrunched up her nose at being “tricked” into riding a “roller coaster” but promises of Mickey-shaped ice cream sandwiches soon smoothed over any hard feelings.

We found a surprisingly short line for Mission: SPACE, for both the green and orange teams, but the girls kids agreed that the dizziness they experienced, even on the less intense green team, put a damper on the overall ride experience.

Of course, educational opportunities are always close at hand at Epcot, and the girls were quickly drawn to a manned exhibit of dolphin bones at The Seas with Nemo and Friends. In typical “tween” fashion, they couldn’t recount exactly what Mark the cast member had to say, but they somehow came away with the knowledge that dolphins swallow their food whole and that their teeth feel something like pegs. Good job, Mark!

We made time for a few other rides, including Ellen’s Energy Adventure, the Gran Fiesta Tour Starring the Three Caballeros at Mexico, and Maelstrom at Norway, however, the girls were most excited to participate in Kidcot, in which they traveled to each country in the World Showcase to obtain stamps and often colorful drawings of each countries’ flags from the attendants at each. While passport books can be purchased at various World Showcase gift shops, children can receive a complimentary cardboard cutout of “Duffy the Disney Bear,” the handle of which can be stamped much like a passport. Seeing the colorful costumes and hearing the authentic accents of World Showcase cast members was part of the thrill but the kids especially enjoyed seeing their names written in various alphabets of the world, from Chinese to Arabic.

Living in Central Florida for the last 12 years, I’ve been to the Disney parks and to Epcot numerous times, but I’ve decided there is perhaps no better way to spend a warm, sunny springtime day than strolling among the millions of blooms and stopping to admire and photograph the cast of characters, albeit in greenery form. These photo opportunities of my daughter are even more meaningful to me, as the last photo I have of her with a Disney character was taken when she was just a year old. Looking back at that photo, I realize that her unease around (ssshhh!) people in costumes was evident even then: in the picture, she’s practically jumping out of my arms, giving Mickey Mouse a glare that would warn him to keep his distance— if only he had peripheral vision… Luckily, the floral variety of characters were above suspicion and she posed happily… for the first dozen shots or so.  After numerous “Just one more!” requests to “Stand right over there” or “Just sit up nice and tall!” this snap happy journalist was chided with groans and growling faces and eventually put the camera away.

Although kids get tortured by too many photos, it’s the dads who often get the short end of the stick at the theme parks:  Carrying the camera bag and the backpack full of snacks and sunscreen; ordering lunch and balancing a tray of food and drinks while mom and the kids relax and “save a table” in the café, or having to backtrack halfway around the world after Duffy the cardboard bear somehow got swallowed up by the Maelstrom. Most of the time, seeing their children having fun is reward enough for Dad. But just in case, a nice cold Pilsner at the “Bier Garten” in Germany certainly never hurt…

The Epcot Flower & Garden Festival runs through May 20. For tickets, information and a schedule of festival events, visit www.FloridaLeisure.com.
